As of 2025, six agricultural properties have been identified for conversion from surface irrigation to pivot systems, with one property completed and another currently in progress.

Longmont is working to convert raw water for flood irrigation to raw water for center-pivot irrigation. On the properties where these conversions are feasible, converting to center pivot irrigation can result in net water savings. The City will continue to work with farmers and continue to seek Natural Resources Conservation Service (NRCS) grant dollars to install center pivots on a case-by-case basis.

Identify fields currently using flood irrigation and collaborate with agricultural producers to design and construct overhead pivot systems tailored to their operational needs. Assist with exploring grant opportunities to reduce out of pocket cost for producers. Secure funding for permanent infrastructure.

Converting surface irrigation to pivot or lateral systems provides water savings by increasing efficiency. The systems deliver precise applications directly to crops while reducing waste and runoff to maximize available water use on site for long-term resource conservation. Additional benefits include enhanced plant coverage to aid in weed suppression and boosting overall crop yield.
