The City defines a methane event as a reading of 5,000 parts per billion (ppb) or higher sustained on average for at least five minutes. These elevated levels are most often associated with oil and gas activity in the region. While methane is not a direct health concern, it is a potent greenhouse gas with significant climate impacts.
In our first year of monitoring, 160 methane plume events were recorded. The City set a target to reduce these events by 75%, aiming for no more than 40 events annually.
